Sodium hydroxide can also cause severe burns when it touches the skin.
Both of these ingredients are important for producing biodiesel. When combined together they create sodium methoxide. This ingredient is the most important ingredient in the recipe for biodiesel – but it is a very harmful chemical. When mishandled it can cause serious health problems when absorbed through the skin, swallowed, or inhaled.
Second to wearing the right protective clothing and gear you also need to make sure that you cover up as much of your skin as you can. As hard as we try to make sure that we handle everything we care accidents do happen and we need to be prepared for those. The best thing that you could wear is a lab gown, overalls, and long sleeved shirts.
When it comes to the gloves that you wear make sure that they are of high quality and not latex. Latex gloves can dissolve when they come into contact with many of the toxic chemicals that you will be working with. Make sure you also wear sneaker or boots and long pants.
Last but no least you should make sure that your workspace has the right ventilation. Ventilation will make sure that the fumes from the chemicals are escaping and you are not inhaling large amounts of methanol fumes. If you inhale too much it can be fatal.
